The waters surrounding the Azores are home to an extraordinary variety of marine life. As many as 28 species of whales and dolphins have been recorded around the archipelago, some living here throughout the year, others passing through during their seasonal migrations.

Here on Faial, lookouts high above the coast still scan the Atlantic, helping experienced local teams locate whales and dolphins at sea — continuing a tradition deeply connected to the island and its history.

    A return transfer between PÁTIO and Horta can be arranged for you at an additional cost. The transfer is not included in the experience price or in the 3–4-hour tour duration.

    Faial’s landscapes do not end at the coastline. Beyond it lies the open Atlantic — home to an extraordinary variety of whales, dolphins and other marine life.

    Your experience begins in Horta with a detailed briefing from the marine team, introducing you to the species that may be encountered, the conditions at sea and the important safety information for the trip.

    But finding whales and dolphins in the Atlantic involves more than simply heading out to sea. Land-based lookouts help locate the animals from observation points around the island, communicating their position to the team before and during the experience. Once information about their location is received, it is time to head out onto the Atlantic.

    From here, every trip is different.

    The species encountered depend on the season, weather, sea conditions and the movement of the animals themselves. Some species are seasonal visitors to the waters of the Azores, while others — including sperm whales — can be found around the archipelago throughout the year.

    And that unpredictability is part of the experience. There is no fixed route through the ocean and no two trips are exactly alike. Instead, you follow the marine team and the information coming from the lookouts, searching the Atlantic for the wildlife that happens to be there that day.

    Along the way, there is also another perspective waiting for you: Faial seen from the ocean, with its volcanic coastline rising from the Atlantic behind you.

    After approximately three to four hours, the boat returns to Horta.
