Join a horse trail full of contrasts. Discover a seemingly forgotten world in which not too many tourists get lost. But those who were there often say: Faial, the Blue Island, is the most beautiful of the archipelago with its evergreen meadows and forests. Volcanoes and awesome views. The black lava mixes with the blue of the sea and green landscapes. Enjoy a hint of adventure while living and riding in the subtropical islands.

This summer we will discover the island during our Discover Trail Faial. Every day we will visit new fascinating locations. With our horses we spend the night in tents close to the sea or in lonely valleys. A touch of adventure during our rides through nature. Start and end of the 6-day-trail will be at the PÁTIO Lodge.

"After a perfect riding day we sat in the evening before

the camp fire and enjoyed the view of the Atlantic."

Arrival at Faial (Airport Horta – HOR), transfer to accommodation and first contact with the horses. Cmmunal dinner at our Lodge and overnight close by in Tents.

The Nature is wild, but our Lusitano horses are relaxed. Alongside the East Coast our trail leads us over lonely meadows and fields. Giant Fern and Erica are growing at the wayside. Around lunch we will be arriving at the small botanical park of Pedro Miguel. We continue our ride to the black lava beach of Praia Almoxarife. Palm trees alongside the beach avenue. Our comfortable campsite is located here. Still we have enough time to visit the nearby harbour-town Horta. We stroll through the colourful marina and visit the most famous bar between Europe and America, Peter Café Sport. In the evening we enjoy our dinner in a cozy restaurant. At night we will sleep in our tents.

The second relaxing day of riding starts right where the first one finished, and takes us along the east coast. The giant heather bushes alongside the trail look a little like gigantic broccoli plants. We take a break at the black lava beach of Praia Almoxarife. The afternoon’s ride takes us to “Quinta de São Lourenço”, a stud farm for Lusitano horses. The farm is located close to the island’s beautiful capital, Horta. We have enough time to take a stroll through the city - visiting the colourful harbour and taking a break at the most famous bar between Europe and America, Peter Café Sport. This bar offers the best gin and tonic in the Atlantic Ocean. Supper consists of mouthwatering Azorean food, served at our Lodge.

Our horses will be climbing up the green valley of Flamengos. The air is full of the smell of Thyme and Mint. Long extensive forest roads invite us to a fresh canter. At 600-meter height we make a break at our picnic place Montanha. Time for both horses and riders to relax. Slowly we leave the mountains and approach the small village Areeiro. After a refreshment stop at the small village pub we ride through an almost impenetrable jungle. In the late afternoon we reach the mystic zone of Capelo. Our campsite is located here, sorrounded by wild jungle. In the late afternoon we can have a relaxing bath in the ocean.

Today the trail leads us to the impressive and bizarre volcanic desert landscape of Capelinhos. Such immense desolation! Ruins of old houses buried with ash from the 1957 volcanic eruption. A lighthouse and underneath, the highly awarded underground Volcano Museum. There is enough time for an optional visit, whilst our horses wait outside. We ride over parts of the new volcano and enjoy a break in a small volcanic cave. In the late afternoon we approach our Jungle Camp where our horses stay for the night. We ourselves stay in our tents at the cliff coast of Varadouro.

We leave our wild romantic place and small paths guide us through Azores Laurel Forests into the small village of Norte Pequeno. You'll find picturesque adegas and small vineyards at the cliffy Atlantic coast. Through a nearly impassable jungle we follow a small path descent to the Faja Bay. The enchanted bay with its giant waves. Surfers come looking here for the best waves. We install our camp and stay close to our horses. In the evening we offer a nice barbecue.

This morning we continue our steep trail out of the bay of Faja. Along cool forests and green meadows we cross the island from south to north. Small jungle paths and fascinating views of the Atlantic Ocean. We are riding to the view-point Miradouro where we have our picnic. Sitting on a stone bench warmed-up by the sun, we will be listening to the wind and the seagulls. Closer and closer we approach our final destination. Riding along the cliff coast we finally complete our Round-Island-Trail and arrive again at the PÁTIO Lodge. A diversified round-trail comes to an end. Tonight we have the farewell dinner and can share our experiences. We spend the night in our tents.

After breakfast we offer an airport transfer for departure, or you can decide on an individual extension to your stay.
